Annie leibovitz also referred to as “Anna Lou” she photographed john Lenon on the day that he was assassinated on.

She was the first ever woman to have held an exhibition at Washington  national portrait gallery in they year 1991

Her influence branches from the work of Richard Avedon and his personal reportage, as it had her developing close rapport with her subjects.

When Anna first returned back to the US states in the 1970’s she began her career as a staff photographer, working for the rolling stones magazine in 1973  a job she would maintain for 10 years  till 1983. Her work and intimate photographs helped define the Rolling Stone look.

Her work has been showcased internationally in museums such as the  Smithsonian American art museum and center of photography in new york.

Her work

She was known for her shoots to be over the top budgets that would later be the center of major financial challenges.

Some of her vanity fair covers have been controversial from pictures of Caitlyn Jenner to Keith haring.

"A thing that you see in my pictures is that I was not afraid to fall in love with these people". - AL.

"I fight to take a good photograph every single time". - AL

I personally really like her picture as she has a way of showing beauty though mise en scene and costumes. Yet they are all famous people, show has a way to present them as normal people. They look so natural or beautiful with the use of colours or black and white colouring.  They all tell a story and she has a natural talent of conveying what she wants in her pictures; normality or beauty. Also she has worked very hard up the ladder to get where she is now, working from magazine to magazine.

First shooting - beckton

Edited version;

Orginal;

I put down the brightness and contrast down. Played around with the colour and hue to make it more autumnal.

I lowered the brightness and contrast to make it more darker. Put down the exposure down. Then i used the hue/ saturation to make the coloration of the green more predominant.

I played with the curves to make it a little darker. Then used the quick selection tool to select the leaves only on the trees then inverted the picture to black and white. Made the hue and saturation of the leaves more greener and used curves again to make the dark sectons to have more shadows.

For this editing i used the levels to make it darker and balance out the lighting. I put down the exposure because there was too much lighting from the right hand side. I used the photo filter to give it an orange effect. Used curves and brightness to lower the greenness of the plants and to even out everything.

I put down the exposure and increased the vibrancy to liven up the greenery of the image. I made it a little brighter with the contrast and brightness tool.

I put down the exposure and the curves.  I played around with the hue and saturation to lower the colouring of the contrast of the picture. Which developed the changing of the colour of tones from red to pink. I used the selective colour tool as well.

Architecture - Canary Wharf

For my second shoot we had to take pictures of architecture. What is architecture to us, whether it is old or new I travelled to the Canary Wharf where it is full of the most modern buildings, which consist of banks, and business buildings. Canary Wharf is only a 20 minutes train commute from my house allowing me the fine access to taking advantage on taking picture of the buildings. I walked around for two hours taking pictures walking from the south quay to heron quay. Some security guards were telling off one difficulty I had whilst taking my pictures from certain buildings, as some buildings need permission-taking pictures of. However I explained that I was a photography student and it was okay. My pictures I noticed were a little bit over exposed.

To edit these pictures I put down the brightness and played around with the exposure to l made the picture clean and sleek. I used he hue and alter to the colour to blue, so i could control the shading of the sky and make it darker. As was trying to achieve the dark night sky with the buildings.

I lowered the brightness because the picture was over exposed. the upper part pf the picture. As when i was taking the picture it was very bright. I used the curves to make the building more conspicuous. I used the colour balance and use the yellow tone to make the sun more apparant.

The picture has lot going on so and a bright blue sky. So i put up the brightness and made the curves higher. Used the hue/ colouration, the red settings to make the red part of the buildings brighter.

I decided to make this picture black and white to show the depth of the building and the sunlight behind. I adjusted the colour settings with it to emphasis the buildings with shadows. I made it from soft to light and put down the opacity down.  This is my favourite picture from the Architecture pictures.

his image was the hardest picture to edit has it was over exposed one the right of the picture. i attempted to low the brightness and curves however didn't work. So I jus lowered the brightness anyways and used the exposure to make it sharper, with the alignment of the building. I used the blue setting on the hue to make the sky and window refection brighter.

Portraits - Waterloo (southbank)

For my portrait shoot I travelled to waterloo, Southbank to ask strangers if I could take their portraits. I was nervous at first and was turned down by two people, which put down my confidence. However a group of young people allowed m to take all five of their portraits, which boosted up my confidence. The day nice and bright, allowing me to take nice pictures with the sun. I had asked about 15 people within 30 minutes for their portraits. I was most excited of the outcome. Most people were concerned about where it would go, however I explained I was a photography student and this would only been seen by teachers to be graded, they were okay with that. My performance was quite good I think I presented myself as outgoing. The idea of talking to strangers didn’t completely frighten me. My main problem I had was that I had some over exposure picture due to the intensity of the sun. I went during my break and spent 2 and half hours in waterloo. This was a fun shoot.

This is my favourite photograph from the portrait shoot. All of the pictures I took were very bright and colourful from the amazing weather on the Friday I took them. I decided to make this picture back and white, which would create more an emphasis on the background. I played around with the colour settings on the black and white adjustment. Made it soft to light, put down the opacity. I like how sharpen her features look and the amount of focus. I had to crop the image to even out rule of thirds.  The model has a very nice smile, which creates an enigma, due to the innocent facial expression.  The aperture was on the lowest f-number, 1.8 allowing more focus on her and blurring the background.

I took multiple pictures of this model, as she was very fashionable and photogenic. The weather was bright and beautiful contributing to the exposure of the picture. I put it on auto tone, put up the vibrancy and lowered the saturation to even out the colour balance. I played around with curves. I didn’t like the other pictures because of the composition and she was moving during some of them.  There was too much sky in some of them and the pictures don’t have any rule of thirds.

Whilst taking these pictures I found this little boutique area with some small food stalls. This man was fixing up some bikes and looked cool so I asked him if I could take pictures of him. He was posing away whilst fixing the bikes. I had some fun taking pictures of him. To edit this picture I used auto tone, put the vibrancy up and put down the saturation. I did this because the colours in the picture were bright and fun, with contrast with blue and black.  The aperture was on the lowest f-number 1.8, this helped as it gave it a shallow depth of field with the amount of focus on the subject and the amount of blur on the background. I like the way the pictures looked as he looks aesthetically appealing with the biker outfit. The sunglasses give some intensity with his facial expression. The modelling was great. The weather was beautifully sunny that day, so I had no problem lighting. On the other hand I could had played around with the rule of thirds to make the composition more playful with the amount that was going on.

I had many attempt with these pictures as the lighting some of them were to over expose.  I asked her to pose for many times, she was willing enough to stunt a pose and create some smiles, unfortunately the conventional portraits didn’t come out properly.  Her outfit was very bright due to the orange pants allowing the colouration of the image mainly focused on the pants. I used auto contrast to edit, put up the vibrancy and lowered the saturation. This allowed the image to immediately create some character with the contrast within the image. Her body language created some depth within the portrait, with her arms towards her face.  The use of the plain wall allowed more attention towards her face. I used the lowest f-number, 1.8.

In conclusion I had fun taking these pictures, as I am quite talkative generally. Convincing people to take pictures of them wasn’t very hard for me. The weather was beautiful to go Southbank during my break on a Friday. I think my pictures came out okay for my first attempts using the lowest aperture for shallow depth of field’s shots. I did get turned down by 3 people at first, however my confidence was put back up when a group of people allowed me to take pictures of all of the individually. From this experiment I realised not to ask elderly people, parents with kids and couples, they like to enjoy their time with each other’s. However to asked young people and people with cameras. They will always let you.

Street photography - Dalston Kingsland

For this shoot we had to go somewhere we didn’t really know. I had only been to Dalston once before, so I thought to explore the area more. It took 15 minutes on the over ground from Stratford. The area has a contrast from old raggedy London from new trendy cafes and vintage shops. I was quite scared of the area as I was by myself.  The pictures didn’t all come out great as I was rushing and uncomfortable with the area, which made me not want to take pictures of people. I walked around for 2 hours around the area. It consists of a market, modernised cafes and vintage shops.  At the same time the red sepia sun came out due to the weather interactions with hurricane Ophelia.  This was not my most fun shoot.

In Dalston there was a market that had a lot of culture to it. I took a picture of this fabric shop, which contained many colours so I thought take a picture of it would be interesting. To edit it I had to crop it to make it straight. Put the vibrancy up and lowered the saturation. Played around with the curves to adjust the brightness on the colours. This is my favourite picture out of my many attempt of trying to capture Dalston. The others I took of the shop were interesting with the use of human elements however the exposure on them was not adequate to edit.

I took this picture in a vintage shop called Beyond Retro. I used the lowest f-number for the aperture to create a shallow depth of field. The use of different colours and the racks of clothes inspired me. To edit I put the vibrancy up and played around with the curves to adjust the colouration of the shoes. I used the hue to brighten up the red tones in the picture. The rules of thirds are okay as you a see the right around in the image.  I like the image as it depicts Dalston’s new trendy side of the town.

The most interesting feature of this image is the illusion of the next row of the fruits, however it is just a mirror. I had to crop the image o make it straight. Put the vibrancy up, lowered the saturation and played with the curves/ brightness to adjust the lighting. Things that went wrong were the rule of thirds in the other images.

  • Born February 20 1902 in San Francisco, California US

  • Adams is a American Landscape photographer

  • His black and white landscape photographs of American west has been majorly reproduced on calendars, posters, books and the internet.

  • He died April 22nd  1984.

He is known as the grandfather of landscape photography. Most of his pictures are of extreme locations. His most legendary work were his environmental conservation efforts with the Sierra Club that led to the creation of Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks. This was his first portfolio taken with his Korona view camera using glass plates and a dark red filter.

His first published photographs and writings appeared in the club’s 1922 Bulletin, and he had his first one man exhibition in 1928 at the club’s San Francisco headquarters.

Adams began to realise that he could earn enough to survive, so he began his journey as a photographer than as a concert pianist.

Adams began to pursue a type of photography called 'straight photography'. In which the lens were empathised and the final print did not appear being manipulated on a camera or a darkroom.

Adams received many awards in his lifetime. He had awards name after him. Adams received an honorary atrium doctor degree from Harvard and a honorary doctor of fine arts degree from Yale university.

His work -

He was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize in breaking news and his team was awarded a Pulitzer Prize for public service.

Fineman received his BFA in photography from NYU’s TISCH school of arts which enabled to develop his growing client list for his versatility and allowed to him to photography New York.

Environmental portraits - Local locations

For this shoot we were asked to take pictures of people in their natural working environment. We were giving two weeks to take pictures. I stayed local, as I wasn’t able to commute to far locations at the time these shoots, so I stayed in East London. I went to locations such as Plaistow, Stratford and New Cross in South London as I was visiting a university opening day.  This project was very similar to the portrait project, as I had to ask people and have a conversation with them to convince them to give me permission. Most people said no as they were busy or uncomfortable and others didn’t mind as long as I explained the purpose of the project and the idea of the ‘environmental portraiture’ concept. This project wasn’t my best, as I didn’t have the time to travel far, which could of ended with a good result of picture, however I couldn’t.  One thing I could of done better was make my self feel more confident with talking to the people, as this time I wasn’t that confident as I was by my self sometimes.

For these pictures I commuted from Canning Town to New Cross for a opening day for a university open day. Whilst I was there I took advantaged of where I was, so I took my camera with me just in case I came pass anywhere that looked interesting. I took pictures of this one lady called Paula that work at this very beautiful costume shop. They sold circus ball gowns and masquerade clothing that looked very fine and rich. She had worked there for years and she had a passion for costumes and vintage burlesque outfits, show had informed me that the clothes were available to buy or hire. I also found out she knew about cameras and knew about photography. For the editing process I edited two different styles of the same picture. One coloured and one black and white. To edit the coloured I use the auto contrast feature, which helps even out the colour’s saturation. Played around with the curves and the vibrancy. The picture has so much life to it with the use of colures and depth of the focus.  The aperture was around 5f.  I liked the black and white one however it gave away the narrative of the photo and didn’t convey her occupation much. I edited using the black and white feature, plying around with the colours to adjust the depth of the picture. Then used the soft to light feature and put down the opacity.  This is my favourite picture of these environmental portraits as it has more life to and I like the rule of thirds in it. The ones that didn't use were too blurry. '

I took this at Stratford inside Westfield on the bottom floor. She worked at this bakery, which sold all kinds of treats. She was very kind enough to let me takes picture of her and was very interested in the whole idea of the project. To edit this I put it on auto contrast, played around with the curves, then put the vibrancy up and lowered the saturation. The photo didn’t need that much editing as there was enough colour and brightness already. Her general working made the realness of the picture.

This man worked in a tyre shop not far from my college. I asked him kindly and informed him about the project and he was delighted to pose for many pictures. I had found out he had worked there for about 12 years and once modelled for some pictures back in the day, however works here and also works part time in security. He was very enthusiastic person and bubbly to take pictures. To edit the picture I played with the curves to even out the lighting as it was a bit over exposed. Then I put down the exposure, put the vibrancy up. Then with the blue factor with the hue, I made the blue shades in the picture brighter to make the picture have some life, plus it made it pop more. I think the composition was right on point; it follows the rule of thirds, which I use to struggle.  However one thing I had hope was to adjust the exposure more whilst taking the pictures.

This man works at a vegan cafe based in Stratford east. I had already visited this shop many time to eat or have a very healthy smoothie. I asked and explained my topic of he photography project to him and he was very excited to do it. I used the low aperture take the photo. To edit I put it on auto contrast, played round with curves and put the vibrancy up and lowered the saturation. This all contributed to the photo as it helped brighten the liveliness in the mise en scene. There were all these greens and brown tones in the image. This man had been a vegan for about 15 years. He was happy with his business and promoting veganism. His name was Ozer Ozer.

This man couldn’t speak English at all, so his boss at help me coordinate him and I directed on the placement in this photo. It was taken near college at a Turkish restaurant.  I placed my camera on the counter to capture this image and I was speaking him kindly. I found out he was new to the country and to the shop. To edit I played around with the curves and put down the exposure as it was over exposed already.  The lighting in the original was horrible as the actual lighting in the restaurant was quite dim and didn’t help with taking the pictures. I also played with the vibrancy a little. What I like about this photo is the rule of thirds, it al coordinate well and follows Fineman’s rule of thirds which is what I mainly tried to follow. The cook himself was very smiley which made the image more alive.

Light photography experiments

For this little shoot I used the photography umbrella to capture these shots, with the help of a LED. I had two other people help me hold the props in different angles.

For my main edited picture the umbrella was on the right hand side, this makes the white light effect on he face. To edit the picture I put it on auto contrast, which made the picture more in depth with the colours. Then I played around with the curves to lower the amount of lighting in the photo, and then put the vibrancy up and lowered the saturation. I then cropped the image because there was too much of the background and I wanted the image to just focus on my model with the umbrella light going on to her face. Omg thing I could of tired was putting the light I the centre, as I only attempted to put it on both sides, left and right.

To take these images I used a golden reflector and a LED light to create the golden flash on her right side of her face. I really liked this portrait because with her brown skin tone the golden light makes her healthier looking.

To edit I put it on auto contrast, plays around with the curves. Then I put the vibrancy up and lowered the saturation. This made the image more golden and added more colour into the image. One thing that was wrong was the amount of shadows on the left side of her face because all the light is coming from the right side of her face. I used the lowest f-number to create the shadow depth of field. On the other hand, next time I would know to adjust the reflector in different angles as wells the LED light.

To test out other sources of light photography I used coloured gels and a LED to experiment with. The green one i just played around with the curves and cropped it to make the rule of thirds framing. I attempted to use

Different coloured gels to see the outcomes and the feels f the different coloured gels. The pink and orange one is the other one I edited. I played around with the curves and put up the vibrancy and lowered the saturation, to intensify the colour coming across her face. The yellow one and blue ones were too blurry or I didn't like the feel of the pictures.

Conceptual photography

The concept for this image was 'showing our inner-clowness.' I made my own postcards, by printing images out and sizing them the right postcard size on Photoshop. Then after I had printed them out, I cut and glued them onto card paper, to make them more solid and more like a postcard, instead of a thin piece of paper. I asked my model

To tilt his head to his left to make him look estrange. I directed him to moving his in different positions and move his head in different places. To edit I first played around with the curves and then turned the vibrancy up and lowered the saturation. Then I used the quick selection tool on the postcard and inverted it, so I had a clean selection of the background. Then at decided to make it black and white. To make it look right, I played around with the colour setting within the black and white effect. Finally I used the selective colour too and made the red colours on the postcard more bold and dark.

This image is called 'a clowns career going underground'. I placed the postcard in the dirt and dogged a little hole for the card to fit in. To edit I played around with the curves to make the colours pop more within the image. Then I put the vibrancy up and lowered the saturation little. This helped the green tones more vibrant. After I used the selective colour tool making the red tones within the image more predominant and dark. One thing I wish I did was digging the hole a bit bigger, so the post card is more in the ground.

The concept for this image is called 'London'. I used a low f-number for the aperture; this made it had a shallow depth of field.  This mainly is focusing on the postcard and having the background blurry. The image shows a stereotypical London, but I wanted to show the actual London bus. To edit I played around with the curves, put the vibrancy up and lowered the saturation. Finally I used the gradient map to make this blue tone, making it to lighten and putting the opacity down a little.

'London is actually a dump'. I found this sink in a street, I put the postcard inside it to create the image.  To edit I played around with the curves to brighten the image. Then I played around with the hue, which made it have this blue grey colour. Making it have this cold feeling.

'Street art'. I walked around Plaistow to find some street art and I found some about a 10-minute work from college.  I was holding up the image against the red tones of the art so it could blend together. As if my postcard was already part of the street art. To edit I played around with the curves to brighten the image. Put the vibrancy up and lowered the saturation. Then I used the selective colour tool, to make the red and orange colours more dark and bold to make the image subtler with each other.  This made the well and the street art blend together.

'No'. This was more of a comical image as the postcard here is a meme and is popular within the Internet. I had a black backdrop and a LED light stand. I told my model to make the same face as the meme within the postcard. He was spot on with the facial expression. To edit I didn't do much, I played around with the curves to get the right tones and I put up the vibrancy a little.  I liked the rule of thirds I used in this image. One thing that could be improved is the positioning of the postcard.

'Street art is a normality'. As we see street art everywhere we go, like the walls ad pavements of London streets. Seeing street art anywhere is our norms now we wouldn't be surprised if it was in small corners but then again artists wouldn't put it in vague places. To edit I just played around with the curves and used the selective colour to brighten the red tone in the postcard.

@Milk

Milk is a verified photography page on Instagram with a mass following of 792k followers right now, January 2018.  Milk is a culturally conscious company built to enable creative expression and collaborations with other brands. I like their pictures because they are abstract and use many varieties of colour themes within each image. They also have this vintage yet retro look to their pictures. I picked these pictures because they caught my eye from the use of simplicity of the girl with the blue coat to the monotone effect in the first one. The girl with the hat has an amazing body strcture and i love the use of colours in that one. The pictures are simple yet abstract.

@lillieeiger

Lillie is a London fashion photographer that is based on Instagram too. Her pictures are more cinematic or very simple sometimes. She used very faded use of bright colours within her monotone pictures. I like the picture of the three girls with the dresses on. It has a plain background allowing the models to be the main capture within the image, you can tell its fashion from the beauty of the part dresses they are wearing.  The other two have this shallow of depth kind of look, making the bottom right more cinematic and the use of colours is great, The first one has this rawness to it.

@shaynacolvin

Shayna Colvin is a american fashion photographer currently studying at the savannah college of art and design. What i lie about her photo's is the minimalist side of her pictures. She attempts to incorporate her ow style in her pictures and used natural background to coney the beauty of Savannah. She said that she like to stay out of the mainstream, her pictures look like pictures from 2016 and 1978. I chose these pictures because of the style and colours within the pictures. The first one of the two girls smoking, i liked on Pinterest already so i ready knew where to look. It looks vintage and retro from what they are wearing, very 90's inspired and Urban Outfitters. She actually worked for Urban Outfitters. The second one i liked the use of lighting in that picture, there is a ray of sunlight across her the model. The editing is very vintage as well. The swimsuit one compliments the weather in that picture and the ocean background goes with it. Its simple yet so beautiful from the fashion to the location. She edits her pictures very desaturted and one colour scheme. Her photography is very natural and laid back.

@Lilybrown

Lily Brown is a Brighton based fashion photographer. She has collaborated with many brands such as Puma, Nike, Footlocker, JD, New Balance and other brands. The type of fashion she captures is very sporty and vintage clothing. Her pictures are very clean and simple as well, as the main focused is the actual clothing itself. All the models tend to sit on the floor or somewhere and have a relaxed body expression. Theres not a lot of editing as you can tell, The picture with the pink stairs i liked because the stairs is quite significant within the pictures as its the brightest. Her body language is quite interesting and i love what she is wearing, its a Tommy Hilfiger dungarees. Its very Pinterest and retro. The first right is very simple with the white wall and window sill. She is promoting Adidas and the hair grabbing is quite sexualising. The second right is also promoting a sportswear brand, very simple and using plants to create the earthy vibe to its simplicity.

@jumaherrera

This is from Herreras 2010 series called 'Dalia Ramos'. She is the designer of the clothing that is being photographed. This type of photography is called 3D inspired fashion photography. It has the cool effect of the red and blue reflection of the same picture of a different one. The pictures are have a very simple plain back drop. The pictures itself are quite straightforward with the modelling with the clothing on and posing for the camera. The editing of the 3D effect makes the entire series. I like the use of colours and the simplicity of the selection of pictures. The clothing is very simple making the picture not have to might attention on clothes itself b put yet the amazing 3D effect. All the pictures of the same idea of the body language with looking downwards or raising the legs upwards or the generic putting the arms bends towards the hip. I liked these pictures for the 3D effect.

Case study

My idea's

One idea is a style of pictures that is 'Pinterest inspired' which i will be taking inspiration from. Pinterest is known for its broad trend making from people uploading a type of fashion. interests inspired clothing would consist of a simple idea with a basic background or with the element of nature and simplicity. I personally follow the app and take inspiration fro it by developing my own style which i create from Pinterest. The images could also be so simple yet so abstract or edgy with the probable hiding ones face but showing the body or just having a plain background and having a model promoting their style within the image. The pictures are taken in many ways with many different lighting and is edited in a 'Pinterest way', there isn't much bright colours but the colours are desaturated a little or having it black and white. The style would consist of simple clothing or vintage or thrifted clothing. Pinterest is very varied so creating pinterest inspired would allow me to have a selection.

The style also is stereotypically been seen very urban oufitters from the laid back look to the vintage look. Urban outfitters clothing is very simple and sometimes very edgy and bright. They can consist have bright mustard puffer jackets to very sporty Adidas hoodies and joggers. The background are usually natural habitats or cool house backgrounds.

From my photography research i liked Lily browns sporty pictures with the really basic backgrounds. Has most people wear brands like Nike and Adidas, so

it wouldn't be so hard to find models to use their own clothing to capture my fashion photography. I want to take pictures of outfits i would wear or i find i is fashionable. I like the idea of capture my own style within my work.

First shoot

@milk inspired

This shoot was Milk inspired as well as Lily Brown. However the style of the editing was more Milk inspired as I was looking through their Instagram page and found a picture with the blue sold sky as the main object. I had my model dress very casual and basic, however still wearing a trendy outfit with the use of Nike. The outfit is all black which contrasts well with the bright sky. I took the picture from a low angle and had my model close his eyes a little, as if he is embracing the warmth of the sky. To edit I played around with the curves to make it brighter. Then I used the quick selection tool for the background and using the colour balance/hue I changed it to this purple tone. In the left bottom corner there was a building showing so I used the content aware tool to remove it. I like the simplicity of this picture and the use of milks inspiration, yet having a twist of my own style of the purple sky because it thought it was cool.

I am still continuing taking the Milk inspiration of the blue sky background. I took the picture from a low angle. To edit I watched some YouTube videos to help me edit these series to get the vintage look. This image I followed a vintage retro tutorial. Firstly I grabbed a faded dark blue solid colour, made it lighten and lowered the opacity down. Then I used a light yellow solid colour made the effect multiply and lowered the opacity down. Next I played around with the curves to play with the shadows and brought down the highlights within the picture. I also played with the red, blue and green channels on the curves. After I used a dark forest green solid colour, made the effect lighten and lowered the opacity. Played with the levels a little. Next I used the selective colour on the red setting. Finally I used the Gaussian blur to smooth out the image.

I wanted to keep this picture very simple with the editing. All I used for this was the curves tool. I played around with the shadows and highlights on each channel, which includes the red, blue and green colours. This helped create this vintage faded film effect. It’s so simple yet looks so effective. The red effect help make the wall background pop more. I like the focus to just be the Nike clothes in this picture, nothing else.

Taking this picture I used a metal rail outside somewhere and took a shallow depth of field focusing on the model yet having the bar effect. To edit I played around with the curves and brightness. I used a brown solid colour and lighten and put the opacity down to get this vintage effect. Then I used the selective colour and on different colour setting played with the settings to create the more faded vintage look. The inspiration from this came from Pinterest.

This was taken during the first shoot but I took inspiration from Lily’s Browns website. She promotes sports brown and this is how she would advertise Nike and Puma. For this picture I used the lowest f-number to focus only on the shoes. To edit all I did was played with the curves, the weather really helped with the quality of the picture. This is one of my favourite pictures.

Second shoot

@pinterest inspired

This was taken in Beckton in a tunnel under the road. The tunnel has all these graffiti and paintings, which look very artsy. I had a flashgun with me to take these however the flashgun wasn’t working, so I had to use natural lighting inside the tunnel, which wasn’t very good. I edited by playing with the curves and using the exposure tool to control the lighting as it was over exposed. Also I sued pre set filters o Photoshop and lowered the opacity down on them. These are my least favourite pictures in this entire shoot of this section. I had seen pictures like this on pinterest.

Third shoot - Canary Wharf

@lilybrown inspired

For this picture I had a flashgun, I had my friend holding it on the left direction of the picture. It was also raining that day so we were in a rush; also the rain gave it this water effect.  To edit I played around with the curves, vibrancy and put a blue filter on it with a solid colour. I used the burn tool to darken some parts of her face because you could see where the light is coming from. I like this picture because it looks cinematic and it follows the rule of thirds.  Due to the weather it created this wet and blue look, which doesn’t really follow Browns photography, however I was inspired by her clothing she take pictures of. One thing I dislike about this picture is the dark clothes blending in with the dark lighting within the background.  One thing I could of done is put the flashgun behind her.

For this entire shoot I used a flashgun to create some lighting within the pictures. It was raining that day which gave this wet look that I was not intending to have. We were next to this little bar/ café which had this metallic walling outside. I had my model sit on the side. To edit I played around with the curves and the levels. Put up the vibrancy and used solid filters to create this purple, dark blue tone in the picture. I was holding the flashgun on the left side and took it whilst it was raining.

This picture is similar to the other but I took it landscape. The editing is pretty much the same. Played around with the curves, vibrancy and used solid colours. Purple and blue colours to heighten the purple colours that were already there. I like her facial expression and her body language however one thing I disliked is you can directly see where the light is shining on. This picture is a bit more dark then the other one, creating this grudge feeling.

For this picture I used a low f-number to focus on the model so the effect of the fairy lights would show. The fairy lights gave this yellow tone effect and also due to the rain and the buildings outside it also gave this purple effect. To edit I played around with the curves. Then the colour balance to adjust the yellow channels within the picture. Also I used a yellow solid colour and lowered the opacity down to make the yellow lights have more of an effect. The shallow depth allowed everything inside to be clear and the windows blurry.

I wanted to focus mainly on the clothes for this picture, hence not showing her face in this picture. I wanted to show the Nike t-shirt because Lily Brown mainly photographs sporty brands. To edit I wanted to make the clothes really sharp within the details of the coat. There are warm tones lights in the background which give it the yellow feel. So I played around with the curves and put the vibrancy up. Played with the contrast a little. Used purple and yellow solid filters and used a blending mode and put the opacity down to create this look. All these pictures have this purple look due to the rainy weather.

This was taken by random; my models were just sitting down casually on this bench in the café. I used a low f-number, which created this shallow depth of field only focusing on the trainers in the middle. The original was very bright and had loads of colours. To edit I played with the curves to adjust the exposure, lowered the actual exposure and desaturated it a little. I used a grey solid colour and lowered the opacity of it to create this grey monotone feel.  This is very pinterest inspired.

I took this from a low angle. I had asked her to put her hand on her face and look towards the camera. To edit I played around with the curves and played with the purple lighting from the café itself. Then I used a light purple solid colour, used a blending mode and lowered the opacity down to add the purple effect. I used the level and increased the vibrancy. I think this is a good portrait showing the fashion photography. I really liked this part of the project; I got to express my own fashion through photography. From this shoot I discovered I really like Lily Brown’s photography and I developed my own style of pictures from her photography.

Fashion retailer

Pull&Bear

Looking through some home pages for fashion retailers, I wanted to pick places I shopped already or I liked of. The options were either Urban Outfitters and Pull&Bear. However, I ended up picking Pull&Bear because I liked the contrast of colours within the bright outfits to the pastel colours in the background. The blend within the coloured background can be done within photoshop, so doing the shoot wouldn't be so hard. Finding a white wall and two models that dress like this hopefully wont. The bold and simple is what attracted me to this homepage. As well the body languages are fun to create.

For this shoot the inspiration came from the Pull & Bear website, they sued a lot of gradient effects within the pictures and video work. For my fashion retailer shoot I wanted to use the simplicity of a plain background and using Photoshop creating a gradient effect at first to was hard creating the exact effect I wanted without making it look very tacky and photoshoped. Finally I discovered a way to creating the gradient effect within the background of the picture. first I played around with the curves, played with the vibrancy and lowered the saturation. I used the selective colour on the red factor to brighten her jacket so it looks like this deep red. To make the faded green gradient effect used the gradient factor on Photoshop next to the solid colour effect and changed the colour to this mint green and lowered the opacity.

The process was the same for each picture to create the gradient effect. For this picture I had my model in the middle looking into the camera. I edited this by playing around with the curves, using the selective colour for the red brightening effect and used a gradient layer. For this background I used a pink red colour and used a blending layer ad lowered the opacity.

From the website there were some pictures of two people standing very still next to each other. I had two of my friends to dress this specific way because it was a pull and bear inspired outfits wit the denim jacket and the stripped blouse. To edit played with the curves and vibrancy. Then I used the gradient effect in the background with these yellowish green colours, I liked the look of it as I was just experimenting however I actually liked the outcome.

I asked my model to put her arm around the other model. During the shoot I was using natural lighting, which made some pictures dark and light, with the sun going up and down. To edit I played with the curves and used this grey gradient effect, which made it, look a little a Urban outfitters shoot. I like the monotone look with the grey tones within the clothes and background.

This purple and pink colours was just playing around with the colours but I actually liked the look of it. I edited by playing with the curves and using the gradient layer and using a blending mode and lowered the opacity. However this effect is more within the middle, which I purposely did.

I screen grabbed the Pull and Bears website and edited my pictures on to the website. This would allow people to actually visualise what my pictures would look like on the website.  I got rid of the original texts by using a white box and using the text tool.  From this shoot I did like some of the pictures but I felt a bit rushed by this due to the time frame and also if I could improve I would use a better background and more lights.

Word research

Words

BOLD PHOTOGRAPHY.

Bold - showing a willingness to take risks; confident and courageous. In terns of colour, shape and design; having a strong, vivid, or clear appearance.

This first inspiration came from this picture of hands with black paint I found online. I liked the simplicity of it and the factor of using black paint.  I went to Asdas and bought some children’s arts and crafts paint. I had my model put the paint all of over their hands and I used two LED lights, white wall and a white bed sheet. I had taken this shoot two times. The first time I had the models hands up whilst sitting down and I was standing taken them right next to it.  To edit with these I used the curves and selective colour, I was mainly experimenting what looked cooler.  Then from teacher feedback I was asked to take it again, from a different angle and different lighting. The second time I went to my house, used a bed sheet ling on the floor, my model lying on the floor and two LED lights. One I was holding and the other sitting nearby. I took pictures of her hands more pressed on the floor and I was above her. To edit I made it black and whitr ad played around with the curves. I like the second picture, which is the bigger picture, it looks more abstract and bold.

The concept of this was taken from the picture of the women and the lemon on her face. I had an orange cut up, used some orange eye shadow on her eye and a plain background.  To edit I played with the curves, increased the vibrancy and use he selective colour to brighten the orange colours. The most difficulty I had with the picture was making the background orange because the models hair was everywhere. So I had to watch a YouTube tutorial on how to blur the hair around with orange background. I used the quick selection and quick magic tool to highlight the outlines I needed. I used the refine edge features to carefully blur out the hair around the selection, this was a long process. Then using the eyedropper tool I used the brightest colour to add to the background. I like the concept and the look of the picture however I to improve I would ask my model to tie back her hair.

I had my model wear red lipstick for this picture. I edited it black and white and made the red lipstick the only thing that was coloured. I played around with the curves first, then used the black and white effect and played with the highlight and shadows with the black and white effect.

Ugly is the new pretty

For this shoot we were challenged to take pictures in an ugly location. Initially I chose to go to a car park, however on the route to the car park I decided to take pictures near the elevator space outside the car park. The elevator area was very dark, ugly and monotone. The lighting was disgusting and very grey. I asked my model to wear very vintage clothing as it reflects my own style and the retro look as been conspicuous through my fashion shoots.  This was taken in a shopping centre car park, it was very quiet and we did have some interruptions whilst people were using the lift.  I am happy I used this location however due to the very bad lighting I had to edit the pictures a lot. I used a flashgun however it was to bright for the flash gun to work.

For the ugly location photo shoot I was originally heading to a  car park to take the pictures, but I came across the space before the car park which I thought was even more ugly, with the artificial lighting and dark corners. I had my model dress very retro 90s and I had him sitting and standing all over the location.  To edit I played with the curves and made desaturated most of the shadows in the picture. then I used the selective colour to brighten the white colours in the picture, like his cot and socks. I used a green solid colour and used a blending mode and lowered the opacity. The picture wasn’t very straight so i used the lens correction feature on Photoshop which helped straighten the image.

I took a picture of his trainers; I first cropped the image because there was too much space of the stairs. Then I played with the curves and desaturated the shadows and highlights. Next I used a brown solid colour, used a blending mode and lowered the opacity to create this vintage effect.

This picture was taken from a low angle, I wanted to capture the ugly background and have it contrast with his bright shirt. To edit I first played with the curves and then I was watching YouTube videos on certain effects and I came across this 3D effect, which looked easy. Firstly I used the levels and made the RBG into red and lowered the output levels all the way down which made it blue, then another layer I went on the levels again and went on the RGB to green, which made it purple.  Next I went on the blue RGB and lowered the output level, which made it red.  After I made the blue blending mode screen and drag the picture to which made the 3D effect. The picture also gave it this red boarder which I kept on.

This was again taken from a low angle, I liked the look of he light behind him and the colours work. To edit I played with the curves and mainly used the selective colours, just on different colour settings to create this cream white look.

This was one of the first pictures I took; I was standing next to the elevator and trying to make a shallow depth of field. To edit I played with the curves and used many solid colours, such as a light beige colour and a yellow colour. I created this mixture of colours in the middle by getting this colour burst image from Google mages and lowered the opacity down. This made the picture look vintager which was the vibe I was intending to get as its m style. One thing I could of improved from this picture was making It straighter.

I had my model sitting down on the stairs for this picture looking into the camera. The original picture is very bright and there is a lot going on. During the editing I decided to make it black and white. To edit firstly I played with the curves and used the black and white tool. I played with the features with the tool. The picture isn’t very straight either, which really frustrated me.  If I had more time I would straighten the pictures with the lens correction on photohop and from shooting taken the pictures straighter.

Street Photography

Street photography is candid photography made in public situations; it is not limited to just roadways but any public setting. Street photography has reached many new levels of its paradox from crazy dream like worlds to dark, elegant mysteries locations. Street photography is meant to give an emotional and visual response epically through humour or fascination.  Most pictures have to have a final composition and a have most attention to the moment selected for the exposure. There are many types of street photography such as Raw, fine art, standard and many more.  Raw pictures usually contain no boundaries, compositions, light and geometry.  Fine art consists of pleasing the eye; they make the viewer feel like they are staring at a beautiful painting.  Lastly standard includes photographers not intruding into the personal space of the subjects, like an observatory style to show the unfolding in front of camera.  The godfather of street photography is Henri Cartier-Bresson.

His inspiration came from this quote “I only know how to approach a place by walking, for what does a street photographer do but walk and watch and wait and talk, and then watch and wait some more, trying to maintain confident that the unexpected, the unknown, or the secret heart of the known awaits just around the corner.”

My analysis of his work is that Webb is very passionate about creating the perfect compositional pattern in all his series and with a strong depth of colour also bursts in his work continuously. He has a narrative and a purpose to all his street photography and that capturing the perfect picture doesn’t come so quickly, it takes 100 pictures to achieve one good picture. I like the use of colour in his pictures and they all coordinate in every picture. The factor of his work being from many countries shows the global scale of street photography instead of western cities of concrete infrastructure.

Alex Webb

Alex Webb was born in San Francisco in 1952. He studied at Harvard but later he started to become interested in photography in high school and later studied it at the Carpenter Centre of visual arts. By 1974 he became a photojournalist and in 1976 became a member of Magnum photos. Throughout this time he first documented small town life within the American south and also did some work in Mexico and the Caribbean. Which slowly progressed his style of colour within his work. He is best known for his use of vibrant and complex colours in his work, epically from Latin America and the Caribbean. Webb has published 14 books about is travels with photography and about photography. His work has been exhibited in many museums around with world such as, Walker Art Center, museum of photographic art and many more. He has many techniques such as layering his images together. Webb focuses a lot on depth in his frames, so he has a strong foreground, mid ground and background within his images, this invites the viewer into the frame. The viewer would first see the closest thing in the shot then look into the mid ground, then slowly the background. Webb likes to create an orderly chaos within his pictures, as if there is a lot going on. However he does not overlap his subjects, yet tell mini stories within each intersection of his images. Webb is very passionate about creating the perfect compositional pattern in all his series and with a strong depth of colour also bursts in his work continuously.

Anna Delany

Anna Delany is from New Zealand but now is based in New York. Her work consists of deep exploration of despair and human resilience from the streets of NY and its subcultures. Delany’s work is very gritty and raw, as she’s always on the streets capturing how the lower classes of NY spend their days. She documents the over looked beauty of decaying neighbourhood’s small communities that is hidden from mainstream social media. Her photography is very real and is all edited in black and white. Every picture has a narrative behind it from the urban decay from the streets of NY. I like her use of photography, even though being black and white. She has a great talent of storytelling with the compositions she uses and the situations she captures. She literally must wait around all day for every picture she takes. Which shows the dedication of a great street photographer. Delany is still quite small and not very noticed yet, however she is a contemporary street photographer in the making.

First shoot

Southbank, London

For my first shoot I went to Waterloo, Southbank. I chose this location because there is always a lot going on and people walking by. The weather on this particular day was very sunny which helped with the good lighting in all the pictures. Street photography requires a lot of time and patience. I had spent bout 4 hours for this shoot walking around and waiting for some moments. I struggled taking pictures up close because I was scared of peoples reactions or they would look. So all these pictures are mainly from a distance or somehow near but not close enough. This picture taken at the skateboard park below the Southbank centre. To edit I played with the curves, creating the film effect by getting rid of the shadows. I increased the vibrancy and played with the selective colour to brighten all the colours within the art.

I took this picture of a guy taking a picture of the skaters, so I thought this would be interesting to capture, he had no idea I was taking this. To edit I made it black and white, I liked the contrast of the bright sunlight to the darkness of the concrete walls of the skate park. Also most street photography is in black and white, so I decided to attempt to edit one from the classic form of street photography.

This was the first picture I took when I walked for the shoot. I stood here for a couple of minutes to take this. I like the composition in this one and I like the way I edited it. All the pictures were edited the same way. Played with the curves, increased the vibrancy and played with the selective colours. I usually tend to edit my pictures n this vintage, retro style so adding this effect to my street photography was interesting. One thing I wish I captured was his face.

This was taken on a little beach by the Thames. I took this whilst I was sitting down on the beach and this couple walked by me. This picture isn’t the best when it comes to composition and I think if I took it in a lower angle it would look better. However this is my favourite, I like the way I edited it and how the sky looks, it looks very vintage. To edit I did the same process, I played with the curves, increased the vibrancy and mainly played with the blue colour with the selective colour. This helped manipulate the colours within the picture to make it look more teal.

This was on the same beach, here was an elderly man painting on the beach. This was such a rare situation to capture. Taking pictures of him was very hard as he kept turning around. To edit I used played with the curves, increased the vibrancy and edited with the selective colour, mainly playing with the blue colours to manipulate the sky. I love this picture as it as a good composition; the buildings across the water and the man painting all work together.

This man was sitting on the beach sunbathing for a long time.  To edit I played with the curves, increased the vibrancy and played with the selective colour. This one looks the most film aesthetic. I like the way the man is sitting on the right hand side and how the boats are coming across the water on the left. One thing I would change is go a bit more back so you could see more of the landscape, so changing the composition would improve this.

I took several pictures of this painter on the beach. Thankfully for the beautiful blue skies and the sunlight all these pictures came out quite decent. I used the f-number of 8 to capture all my street photography; this would allow me to capture everything in detail in a picture. To edit I played around with the curves, increased the vibrancy and played around with the selective colours. I mainly used the blue feature to manipulate the blue tones in the water, his shirt and the sky. Putting up the vibrancy made the colours in the picture pop out more. I like the composition as everything is even within the picture.

This picture has the element of humans and animals in the same space. The alignment in this image works together even through its quite tilt due to the beach. Originally I didn’t think much of this picture, however from teacher feedback, the element of animals and humans together was impressive. To edit I played around with the curves, increased the vibrancy and de saturated it a little and played with the blue colours in the selective colour. This made the sky and water more teal and changes the entire perspective.

Shoot two

Liverpool Street, London

For the second shoot we had researched two street photographers; an older one and a contemporary one. From my research I decided to take inspiration from Alex Webb as all his photos consist of a vibrancy of colours and compositions. My intention for the second shoot was to take his way of capturing bold colours and introducing them into my own shoot. So when I travelled to Liverpool Street and Shoreditch area. It was very hard as the weather on that particular day was bipolar from sunny skies to cloudy grey. I attempted to go a bit close this time and I used a different camera, instead of a 35mm I used a 50mm to get more detail. I was sitting on this staircase in front of the national station trying to attempt to take pictures, which would stand out. This lady dressed in all red appeared. So I quickly took one of her and legged it. To edit I played with the curves to get rid of the shadows to make it look a film aesthetic. Then I played with the vibrancy o make her red clothes brighter. Finally I played with the red settings on the selective colour and some other colours to make the picture bolder.

For this picture I stood behind this metallic street art as the colour in the picture. To edit I used he curves, the vibrancy and used the selective colour again. I used the blue feature to heighten the blue art in the picture. This picture was taken very secretly but I was abled to capture peoples face whilst they were walking.

This was taken from a shop window in Shoreditch. We were walking around Shoreditch for a while and I didn’t come across anything interesting for a while. To edit I played with the curves, vibrancy and selective colour again. I wanted to stay consisted in the way I edit my pictures. This one I mainly manipulated the red and orange colours in the picture.

I took this whilst we were walking to Shoreditch, this man was waiting for the traffic light and he had noticed I was taking a picture and smiled.  To edit I used the curves, vibrancy and selective colour. Due to it being mainly grey I used the neutrals colour and black colour to manipulate the picture. this isn’t my favourite picture from my street photography. This shoot did allow my confidence within myself to go closer, changing the perspective of my pictures.

Shoot three

Covent Garden, London

For this shoot I went to Covent garden around 10 in the morning. This was a mistake as it wasn’t that busy around this time. I took this picture near the Apple Market; I like the sunrays coming from the pillars. There is a person in the far left but he is hidden away. To edit I played with the curves, then increased the vibrancy to make the yellow shades pop and then used the selective colour. I mainly use the yellow and white colour adjustments, however all of them were tested out. After I use a yellow orange solid colour, used a blending mode and lowered the opacity to empathise the yellow colours in the image. Finally I cropped the image a little.

This picture was taken in the apple market where all the musical acts go on. We were waiting a long time to attempt to take pictures of the acts, finally I gave £1 the women a singing opera music and finally was abled to take some close ups of the women. It was dark in this part near the stairs I was standing nearby.  I took upon the darkness of the picture and tried to edit it the shadows to create a silhouette effect. To actually edit I played with the curves to cut out the highlights and shadows, then I used the vibrancy to make the colours bolder and finally I used the selective colour. Lastly I used the lens correction to straighten the picture.

This picture is when I was abled to get close to the opera singer. To edit I played with the curves, the vibrancy and the selective colour. I also used a solid colour to brighten the yellow background. This picture was quite under exposed so it was hard to edit. This is my least favourite picture from the entire shoot.

Initially we had planned to go Niel’s yard to take pictures, it had a lot of colours and is known to be a picture-shooting place. However when we arrived here the place was very small and it wasn’t very busy.  Taking street photography pictures was very bad, especially because we got there very early.  To edit al these pictures I used the curves, played with the vibrancy and used the selective colour to brighten the colours inside the pictures. This was my least favourite shoot for the entire street photography segment. If I had spent more time out in Covent Garden I would of gotten better pictures.

Notion of Intimacy

For this project it was a group decision on what we wanted to photography. We all gave in some ideas but concluded on doing close up, portraits, intimacy photography. Focusing on the details in things and trying to convey it in a artistic way, not people holding hands but yet nakedness and beauty in things. Close ups can be based on physical factors from the body to objects. Portraits can be taken traditionally it with some colour or have a narrative to it.  Everything must be shown in detail, so I will be using 35mm and 50mm camera’s for this project.

Lina Scheynius

Lina Scheynius was born in 1981 in Vanersborg, Sweden and currently lives in London. Her photography is very personal and presented in a visual diary way. She captures scenes from her daily life, exploring and observing her mates, lovers and herself in many of her pictures. Most of her pictures have a sexual undertone and very refreshingly explicit nudity. She questions the traditional female role as the inactive and objectified. She’s captivates an audiences into her intimate world with the use of viewing her private life. Her work has been showcased in Exhibition 01, Foam museum and currently in the Het nutshuis.

My inspirations

My inspirations have come from Lina as well as Pinterest. I mainly want to focus on taking close up and portraits. I want to use a lot of colour and taking very artistic photo’s, come out of my comfort zone. I like the idea of use nature as a object within my pictures as nature is very pure and earthly. I would also like to take normal portraits but with some kind of line of colour or object they are holding or somewhere interesting.
